     When I am dubbing, I think I improved my translation skills a lot. When I translate the dubbing from Chinese to English, I try to use a lot of slang that I often saw on Disney Channel or that American people speak in real life. For example, for words like “of course” and “yeah,” an English speaker may just say “duh” like slang, especially in the situation of something being really obvious. Although I am confident in speaking, I would like to speak with more feelings. Therefore, when I am dubbing, I will also use some gestures or some expression to get my feelings while recording.

 

     While working with my group members, we discuss the translation. Also, when we are recording, we don’t blame each other if there are bloopers. We just encourage each other and record again until the perfect one comes out. I am really thankful that my teammates who need to have a conversation with me during the dubbing will accept my request to record again and again until I think that we record it perfectly. Also, I am grateful for my teammates who put on the subtitles and add the background sound to make the video better and dub conveniently when there are subtitles at the bottom of the video.

 

     There is a change I did observe in my speaking performance from recording video to live performance. When we are doing the recording, there are only four of us in the room. But we actually record the conversation in three parts. But when I am recording, there is no other audience in the room and no camera. Therefore, I can’t really show my emotions during the recording. But when I am doing the live dubbing in the classroom with many audiences. I would like to make my emotion more obvious. I actually did a lot of expression when I was dubbing live.

 

     For me, speaking at the right time is the most challenging. In my past experience when I am doing dubbing, I dub the video in the original language. For example, the video is in English originally; I dub in English. But for translation of dubbing, I need to catch the right time to speak. I need to start speaking and end speaking at the same time as the character. If I finish speaking but the character on the screen is still speaking, then the dubbing will be weird.

 

     I didn’t use ChatGPT for the process in the module. Because I would like my translation of the dubbing to be as native English as possible. I would like to dub the video in a more natural and human way. Therefore, I didn’t use ChatGPT to help me check my translation and others.

 

     I would consider using dubbing in my future teaching. Because sometimes the video that students like or have interest in is not dubbed in English or Chinese. If I want to get students’ attention and let them not only think the video is interesting but also know the meaning of the video, I can dub the video into the language that students can understand. Also, I would like my students to try dubbing in English. But the video will be very easy for them. Students can not only learn teamwork but also improve their English speaking and confidence in recording.
